Chicken Coops for Women Entrepreneurs
FLF’s newest program involves sponsoring three village women who have converted their back yards to chicken coops. FLF provided funds to build the coops and purchased the first round of chicks, feed and antibiotics for these women to nurture and raise chickens. The chickens are used for both laying eggs and reproduction of more chicks. The women sell the eggs and chickens in the community to increase their incomes. Additionally, the chickens provide their own families with much-needed protein-rich diet that is often lacking in this village’s diet.
The women selected are single mothers who have had to find ways to provide for their families. The women have shown incredible resourcefulness and a willingness for hard work.
Given the success of this program, FLF would like to expand this program and offer more village women opportunities to invest in chicken coops.
